Located in the heart of the Stellenbosch wine region of South Africa, Vrede produces new world wines with complex characters, wines that are easy drinking yet laced with depth and full-bodied flavours.
Beneath the towering presence of Stellenbosch’s famous Simonsberg and Jonkershoek mountains, where dairy cows use to graze, you’ll find the rolling vineyards of Vrede Wine Farm. Vrede is situated against the eastern slopes of the Bottelary ward. This is widely regarded as South Africa’s premier wine region and the farm is indeed blessed with excellent wine growing conditions. A mild, Mediterranean climate prevails and during summer, generous sunshine is tempered by cool breezes blowing in from the nearby ocean. The breezes create ideal, slow ripening conditions, allowing the grapes to develop rich varietal character and an intense concentration of flavours. The name Vrede means Peace or Tranquility.
An exciting new chapter in the farm’s history started in 1992, when cape businessmen Kleintjie Bellingan transformed the dairy farm into a well established wine farm. With his characteristic energy and idealism he set out to polish the many facets of this jewel. A progressive new vineyard plan was implemented. The old wines were uprooted and a team of viticulturists extensively analyzed the soil and micro-climates the farm had to offer. At first 40 hectares were planted of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. To optimize the great potential of the land, great care was taken to match each specific cultivar or variety with the terroir best suited to it.
Today, Vrede Wines has grown to a business, which offers cold storage, wine sales and conferencing as well as a function venue. The vineyards expanded to 52 hectares and our wine portfolio has grown to accommodate 9 wines.
The brand new tasting facility was build, with a wooden deck overlooking a picturesque view over the vineyards and in the distance Table Mountain. With a new and young dynamic team we look forward to many new ideas and challenges.
